Nevada offers school children educational opportunities in public schools, private schools, or homeschooling. Additionally, Nevada provides several choices for higher education institutions, whether public, private, or via community colleges.

Several public higher education institutions reside in the Silver State. The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) is the state’s flagship land-grant institution; founded in 1874, it enrolls over 16,000 students. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) enrolls over 28,000 students in over 220 undergraduate and graduate programs. Nevada State College at Henderson, founded in 2002, enrolls over 1,900 students and offers several baccalaureate degree programs. These three universities comprise part of the University of Nevada System of higher education.

Nevada is also home to impressive private and professional institutions. Touro University Nevada, with campuses in Henderson, Nevada and Vallejo, California, provides graduate education with a focus on health careers and teacher preparation programs. The University of Southern Nevada in Henderson is a private, non-profit independent education institution which began as the Nevada College of Pharmacy, and has evolved with its addition of a College of Nursing offering a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) program. Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village offers a private, independent, four-year liberal arts college with degree programs in over 14 different fields, continuing education programs, and a graduate level program in education.

Community colleges round out Nevada’s higher education opportunities. Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) in Reno serves over 12,000 students with programs toward associate degrees and certificates in over 40 academic and occupational areas; over 40 sites exist throughout the county. Great Basin College in Elko serves approximately 4,000 students at campuses and satellite centers across rural Nevada. The Community College of Southern Nevada (CCSN) operates in over 50 locations, with 3 main campuses and 11 learning centers across 4 counties; over 70,000 students take advantage of its over 2000 career fields. Western Nevada Community College (WNCC) is a comprehensive community college that enrolls over 6,000 students in campuses in Carson City, Fallon, and Minden/Gardnerville, with additional instructional centers; WNCC offers a diverse selection of approximately 50 academic degrees and certificates.
